Dear Editor,India is going through a raging controversy about quotas in education (I-W, June 2). The scheduled castes and tribes, and backward classes have never had a chance to come up in life, while the ones with merit are facing barriers in moving forward.Once we bring everyone to the starting line, before we say, "Ready, Set and Go," we want to ensure that the competitors are indeed competitive. If we want a successful, stable and sustainable India, the nation needs to bring everyone to the starting line. Quotas are not charity; they ensure safety and protection of the entire population and an investment to prevent a lava eruption, a tsunami or a forced equality that will doom us. We have to facilitate all-round development, safety and security for all. We have to make a little sacrifice.Mike GhouseVia Email
